OC Swim Captains Commit to Progress

For an athlete to reach their full potential, it generally takes a large amount of energy and mental sharpness.
This is especially true when considering swimming, which requires ample precision, skill, dedication, focus and stamina.
Besides great coaching, of course, it helps when a swimmer has encouragement from their teammates.
Members of Ocean City High School’s boys swim team have a feeling of encouragement this season from their teammates, all led by team captains Jack Baker, Max Carter and Tanner Driscoll.
Shane McGrath, the Red Raiders’ head coach, says Baker, Carter and Driscoll were chosen as captains by how they conduct themselves during practice and at meets.
“[They were chosen because of their] character, dedication, how they lead by example and their commitment to our program,’’ said McGrath.
The captains participate in practices and meets with the idea of being committed toward improving themselves and their teammates.
“They are part of a team that works hard every day to be as good as they can possibly be,’’ said McGrath. “All three captains have qualified for the South Jersey invitational and the Cape Atlantic League Championships.
“All three of them have individual qualities that the rest of the team can easily see. Max is the voice who can command, while Tanner and Jack are the captains who teach by example.’’
While Baker, Carter and Driscoll are getting the job done as athletes, they are also strong students. McGrath noted that all three of them are Honor Roll students.
The Red Raiders will compete in the South Jersey Invitational Jan. 25, at Gloucester Institute of Technology, in Sewell, and the Cape Atlantic League Championships Jan. 30, at Atlantic City High School.
Other Ocean City swimmers have also contributed to the team’s success this winter.
“We have a great freshman class that consists of Gavin Neal, Matt Woodside, Michael Kelly, Jackson Agnellini, Pat Armstrong and Colin Abbott,’’ said McGrath. “We also have two juniors, Steve Gooden and Dolan Grisbaum, who are school record holders, and have the potential to be top 16 in the state in their events. We also have Ethan McCarron, a senior, who is our primary IMer (Individual Medley) and breaststroker.’’
