CAPE MAY – The Cape May Youth Waves Swim Team announced the appointment of Tom Medvecky as head coach for the upcoming season.
According to a release, Medvecky, 30, comes from Piscataway where he grew up swimming with the Scarlet Aquatic Club that produced swimmers such as Rebecca Soni, six-time Olympic medalist.
Medvecky attended The College of New Jersey and competed on the swim team under coach and mentor Brian Bishop, earning All-American status 14 times and breaking five school records. His main events were the 200 and 500 free along with the 100 and 200 butterfly.
Following his collegiate career, Medvecky was employed as a teacher in his hometown and was assistant coach for the Raritan Valley YMCA swim where he produced swimmers that earned spots in the championship meets in Charlotte, N.C.
Medvecky worked with a variety of different teams and age levels over the years and eventually moved back to coach his home team – Scarlet Aquatic Club – where he worked under Head Coach Tom Speedling.
Speedling, who has produced numerous Division 1 athletes and World Championship Qualifiers, shared his knowledge and experience with Medvecky and mentored him in a new set of coaching styles and techniques that produces results and motivates swimmers.
After two years with Scarlet, Medvecky moved from Piscataway to Cape May with his wife Kelsey and is currently a teacher at Cape May City Elementary School.
“I am excited for the opportunity with the Cape May Waves and look forward to sharing my knowledge, experience and one of my greatest passions with young people,” stated Medvecky. “I also look forward to helping develop and grow the team for future success.”
The Cape May Waves Youth Swim Team season begins in mid-September. Registration is currently open for the Waves Summer Stroke and Conditioning Clinic which runs from June 24 through Aug. 8.
The clinic is for swimmers ages 6-18 and consists of conditioning, stroke work, starts and turns. Practices are held at the Coast Guard Base and the Cape May City Elementary School pool. Participants should be on a swim team or have the skills to be on a swim team.
