Mikala Gillespie and Dara Hennessy, both of whom graduated from Ocean City High School were on the roster for the Rowan University women’s lacrosse squad this spring. Gillespie, a senior who plays attack, competed in each of the first 18 games and started in 16 of them for Rowan. She had 23 goals and 13 assists during that time. Hennessy, a sophomore who also plays attack competed in nine of the first 18 games for the Profs. Hennessy recorded five goals during that span.
Through May 4, the Profs had an overall record of 11-7 and they were 6-5 on their home field. In the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) they were 5-1. They advanced to the NJAC Championship Tournament where they defeated Montclair State University in a semifinal round contest held on May 1 in Glassboro. On May 4, Rowan was defeated in a championship round game by The College of New Jersey in a matchup held in Ewing.
Let’s take a look at other local student athletes who are competing in women’s collegiate sports this spring season:
Jany Anderon, Emily Culmone, Sofiya Lebedeva and Alexandra Kancy, all graduates of Ocean City High School are on the roster for the Stockton University women’s rowing team this year. Kancy and Lebedeva are seniors, Anderson is a sophomore and Culmone is a freshman. Stockton placed third at the Mid Atlantic Rowing Conference Championships held at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania.
The Ospreys are scheduled to compete in the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia on May 10 and May 11.
Cierra Granger (Ocean City High School) is a senior listed as a middle distance runner for the Stockton University women’s outdoor track and field program this season. Granger was a part of the Stockton 4 by 400 relay team that finished in fourth place with a time of 4:18.07 at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships which was held at G. Larry James Stadium in Galloway.
The Ospreys finished in third place in the team scoring at the NJAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. They are scheduled to take part in the Atlantic Region Championships in Cortland, New York on May 15 and May 16.
Carrie Wunder (Lower Cape May High School) is a junior captain who competes in throwing events for the Rowan University women’s outdoor track and field program. Wunder had her season best distance of 131-feet 1-inch in the hammer throw at the Lion’s Invitational held on April 27 in Ewing.
The Profs are scheduled to participate in the Swarthmore Final Qualifier Meet on May 13 in Swarthmore, Pa. Rowan won the New Jersey Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
