Cary Nagle and Romeo Rodriguez, both graduates of Middle Township High School, were wreslters for Ursinus College, in Collegeville, Pa. Nagle, a sophomore in the 174-pound weight class, had six victories for Ursinus. Rodriguez, a freshman, who competed at 125 and 133, had 20 wins, including 12 pins.
The Bears had an overall dual meet record of 9-3, with a mark of 6-2 on their home mat. They went 3-3 in the Centennial Conference. Ursinus placed fourth in team scoring at the Centennial Conference Championships, in Allentown, Pa. From there, they place 10th at the NCAA Midwest Regional, held in Ithaca, NY.
Nagle and Rodriquez weren’t the only local student-athletes who saw success in college sports this winter.
Dej’Hanee McNeil (Lower Cape May Regional High School) was a junior forward for the Alvernia University (Reading, Pa.) women’s basketball team. McNeil, listed as a Sports Management major, played in 11 games and posted 14 rebounds. The Golden Wolves had nine wins, with four victories on their home court. In the Commonwealth Conference, they tallied three wins.
DJ Smith (Wildwood Catholic High School) was a junior guard for the Cabrini University (Radnor, Pa.) men’s basketball program. Smith, listed as a Business Management major, competed in 25 games and started in nine of them. He averaged nine points per game with 66 rebounds, 13 assists and seven steals.
The Cavaliers tallied nine overall wins, with a mark of 5-5 at home. In the Atlantic East Conference (AEC), they had five victories. They advanced to AEC Tournament, where they were defeated by Immaculata, in a contest held in Radnor.
Lauren Moretti (Wildwood Catholic High School) served as a junior guard for the Delaware Valley University (Doylestown, Pa.) women’s basketball team. Moretti, listed as a Secondary Education major, started in all 25 games and led her team with 13.4 points per game, 52 assists and 50 steals. She also had 115 rebounds. The Aggies had one victory on the season.
Jake McGonigle (Wildwood Catholic High School) was a freshman guard for the Holy Family University (Philadelphia, Pa.) men’s basketball squad. McGonigle, listed as an Accounting major, played in 27 games and started in 11 of them for Holy Family. He had 51 rebounds, 46 assists and 20 steals.
The Tigers had 10 overall wins, five of which were on their home court. In the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, they posted seven wins.
