Local Athletes Contribute to Success of College Sports Programs

Kyion Flanders (Wildwood High School) and Luciano Lubrano (Ocean City High School) both play for Stockton University’s men’s basketball team.
Lubrano, a junior guard, played in each of the Ospreys’ first nine games, and started in five of them. He was averaging 5.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game during that time, and he also had six steals and made seven 3-point baskets.
Flanders, a sophomore guard, started in Stockton’s nine games, and led the team in points per game (14.9), assists (24) and steals (19). He also had 15 3-point baskets.
Through nine games, the Ospreys were 7-2, with a mark of 4-1 on their home court. In the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), they had a 5-0 record. They will host NJAC opponent New Jersey City University Jan. 11.
Let’s take a glance at other local student-athletes who are participating in collegiate sports this winter.
Savanna Holt (Ocean City High School) is a freshman guard for Rowan University’s women’s basketball team. She played in each of Rowan’s first 10 regular-season games, averaged 10.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game during that span, and also had 18 3-points baskets.
After 10 games, the Profs were 9-1, with mark of 4-0 at home. In the NJAC, they were 5-0. Rowan will host fellow NJAC member William Paterson University Jan. 8.
 Ryan Legler, a Wildwood Catholic High School graduate, is a junior guard for Rowan’s men’s basketball team. Legler played in eight of the first nine games, and started in two of them. He was averaging 6.3 points per game, 2.1 rebounds, had seven rebounds, and made 12 3-point baskets during that time.
After nine games, the Profs had an overall record of 4-5, with a 2-2 record at home. They had one win in the NJAC. Rowan will host NJAC competitor William Paterson Jan. 8.
 Ben Wiley (Ocean City High School) is a freshman, who is listed as a competitor in sprints for this year’s men’s swimming and diving team at Rowan. In meets through Dec. 8, Wiley held the team’s second best time in the 50 butterfly event (25.88 at the WPI Gompei Invitational in Worchester, Mass.).
The Profs were 3-1 in dual meets in 2019, with a mark of 2-1 at home. In the NJAC, they were 3-0. Rowan will travel to Ewing Jan. 25 to face NJAC competitor TCNJ.
Mathew Capozzoli (Wildwood Catholic High School) is on Drew University’s men’s basketball team this year, as a sophomore. Capozzoli competed in four of the first eight regular-season games for Drew.
After eight games, the Rangers were 7-1, including a mark of 6-1 on their home court. In the Landmark Conference, they were 1-0. The Rangers will host Landmark Conference opponents Juniata and Susquehanna Jan. 11 and Jan. 15, respectively.
