The list of teams in the South Jersey area look to provide competitiveness and excitement throughout this spring high school sports season is quite extensive. It certainly includes the Cape May County Tech High School softball program.
The Hawks fought for and earned each of their five wins in 2018 and they’re working diligently to reach their full potential this season. Facing a tough challenge at just about every turn is expected when teams plays in the Cape Atlantic League, but the Hawks will not back down from the considerable opposition.
With an optimistic head coach, Barry Kopf, at the helm and a solid group of student-athletes willing to learn and grow as softball players on the roster, look for Cape May County Tech to be productive this spring.
Key returning players for the Hawks include Amy Poserina (pitcher, center field), Lorin Perednas (second base, pitcher), Dannie Piazza (short stop), Giana Esposito (first base) and Paige Sittineri (third base, catcher, outfield). All of the athletes listed above are members of the senior class.
Coach Kopf mentioned Julia Mohr, a freshman, as being among the promising newcomers to the varsity roster this year.
“Amy Poserina, Lorin Perednas, Dannie Piazza and Giana Esposito [will be looked upon as leaders],’’ Kopf said. “I would like to see them lead in sportsmanship, be leaders in the classroom, and take the young players under their wings and train them in their positions.’’
The Hawks are scheduled to face Holy Spirit at home on April 9 followed by a road game at Saint Joseph (Hammonton) on April 11. They return home to host Pleasantville on April 12.
Cape May County Tech competes in the Cape Atlantic League United Division along with Pleasantville, Holy Spirit, Buena, Wildwood Catholic, Saint Joseph (Hammonton) and Our Lady of Mercy.
“We lost four players at graduation last year and there are many new girls replacing those who left,’’ Kopf said. “It will be a year of rebuilding.’’
Last season, Cape May County Tech advanced to the New Jersey Vo-Tech (NJTAC) Tournament and they’d like to advance further in the bracket this season.
“I would like to go deeper than the second round in the NJTAC Tournament and not lose so many one run games this year,’’ Kopf said. “We are hoping that Lorin Perednas becomes the third softball player in Cape May Tech history to get 100 hits.’’
