The Cape May Tech girls swim team made it further into the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Team Championship meet than ever before.
“Our season was one for the books,” Coach Dawn Dudley said. “Honestly the girls wanted it so badly and we only went as far as we did because of the heart they swam with this season, not just their hard work.”
The girls would talk about their upcoming swimming meets in and out of the pool.
“We would gather before every meet and talk about excitement we would have after swimming great,” Dudley said. “I think the girls really had their head in the game this year and worked really hard both in and out of the pool. Each meet was exciting and I can’t pin point a single meet that we didn’t swim well in.”
The season started off with a big loss against Middle Township high School, but the team came back strong against Cedar Creek the following meet.
“After Cedar Creek we competed against Oakcrest and even though we lost by only ten points, this was the true changing point,” Dudley said. “Our girls were achieving times that surpassed their goals. This meet was the one where we knew something big was coming this year.”
The season continued with four more wins which took the girls into the third playoff round.
“It became the first time any Cape May Tech sport has ever made it that far,” Dudley said. “We competed against Middle Township again and it resulted in a loss, but almost every girl on the team reached best times. Along with the season, the girls managed to look in a few school records.”

Dudley said if the girls were challenged to swim something they weren’t familiar with, it didn’t matter to them.
“They stood up on those blocks and gave us their all, every time,” Dudley said.
This year was Dudley’s first coaching at Tech. She has previously coached at Triton High School, Absegami High School and Oakcrest High School.
“Our younger athletes are even more excited than they were in the beginning of the season,” Dudley said. “Hhopefully we will gain some good freshman to add to the team for next season. I see us being a team to beat next season.”
