The Middle Township High School boy’s lacrosse team and the Ocean City High School boy’s lacrosse squad are obviously unique and have an approach to the game that is all their own. But, something that the two programs have in common is competitiveness and the willingness to face off with any and all opponents without fear or hesitation.
Here is a closer look at the Red Raiders and the Panthers:
OCEAN CITY BOY’S LACROSSE:
After finishing the 2018 season with an outstanding overall record of 16-5, the Red Raiders hit the ground running this spring.
Key returning student athletes for Ocean City include Kyle Saul (senior, defense), Anthony Inserra (senior, midfield), Christian Kuhn (senior, attack) and Charlie Dahl (senior, goalie). Promising newcomers hoping to impact the varsity lineup in positive ways include Tommy Schutta (freshman, midfield), Charley Cossaboone (freshman, midfield) and Nick Volpe (freshman, midfield).
“Kyle Saul [is looked upon as a leader], looking for him to set the standard for every other player to follow,’’ Ocean City head coach Joseph Latorre said.
Coach Latorre views his team as a contender in the Cape Atlantic League and believes that Lower Cape May, Egg Harbor Township and Absegami are the top teams to beat in the Division this year.
The goals, according to Latorre this year’s goals are a Conference championship and an NJSIAA State championship. Ocean City has a road game scheduled at Lower Cape May on April 17.
MIDDLE TOWNSHIP BOY’S LACROSSE:
The Panthers are looking to improve with each practice and game this season. Key returning student athletes for Middle include Kyle Roscoe (senior, defense), Miguel Abraca-Vargas (senior, goalie), Ryan Nagle (senior, midfield), Tom Stahler (senior, midfield), Hunter Wolford (senior, goalie, defense), Brady Wynn (junior, midfield), Roberto Ayala (junior, defense), Riley Campbell (junior, attack), Dylan Koncyk (junior, defense) and James Pickering (sophomore, defense).
Promising newcomers to the varsity level include Jack Butterfield (senior, midfield), Shawn Gaston (junior, midfield), Travis McCray (sophomore, midfield), Paul Ogdon (sophomore, midfield), Brandon Rosensteel (sophomore, defense), Matthew Frame (freshman, attack), Austin Shagren (freshman, attack) and Brett Nabb (freshman, midfield).
The leaders of the team according to head coach Thomas Griffin will be Kyle Roscoe, Ryan Nagle, Miguel Abarca –Vargas, Hunter Wolford and Brady Wynn.
“In the beginning of the season we will rely heavily on our defense and goal tending to keep us in games,’’ Griffin said. “As the season progresses and our offense gels we will be more than capable of improving upon last year’s record.
“We are young having lost 16 players from last year’s team we have filled positions with young gritty players. Our plan is to develop throughout the season and by mid April gel as a team.’’
Middle Township has a home game scheduled versus Mainland on April 17.
