Pets Bring Holiday Cheer to Center Residents

Summer and volunteer Peggy Gretz pass out a wrapped Christmas Gift to Oceana Rehabilitation Center resident Mike Worth.

By Johanna Hovik

COURT HOUSE – Pups paraded around in their holiday best at Oceana Rehabilitation and Nursing Center Dec. 21, spreading joy to residents. Every Wednesday volunteers bring pets and service dogs to Oceana, but this Wednesday was a bit different. The pups dressed in their Christmas best and passed out gifts in the day room creating a Pet Christmas Party.
Residents made their way to the day room, ate treats and spent time with the pets. Christmas carols were sung, and residents enjoyed Christmas treats as they opened gifts presented by volunteers. Sweaters, socks, pajamas and even jewelry were unwrapped delighting Oceana residents to help make their Christmas bright.
The pups even paraded through the halls making personal visits to residents unable to make it to the party. Nurses smiled as the dogs wagged through the halls spreading joy and delighting all.
Volunteer Peggy Gretz is hoping more volunteers join their efforts. The group meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Oceana Rehabilitation Center on Route 9 in Court House.
Some of the pets are service dogs, but many are personal pets. If interested in joining, dogs must be social and up to date on shots.
