County Shelter Gets More Than Flies With Honey

By Herald Staff

CREST HAVEN — County Sheriff Gary Schaffer announced Tuesday, April 14 that Honey, a homeless two year-old female shephard mix residing at the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is one lucky dog.
During routine screening she tested positive for heartworms. Because the treatment for heartworms is expensive and time-consuming this usually means a death sentence for a shelter dog. Honey is a sweet dog and Shelter veterinarian technician Christine Wright felt she was worth the investment. As a result this lucky dog has led to a groundbreaking collaboration initiated by County Shelter Manager Judy Davies-Dunhour who reached out to two local animal advocacy groups and a local veterinarian for help.
Animal Outreach of Cape May and the Animal Alliance of Cape May County will split the cost of Honey’s treatment and Dr. Nick Holland of Shore Veterinarians has agreed to provide the treatment at a reduced cost.
This type of partnership will become part of business as usual for the Shelter, according to Sheriff Gary Schaffer who stated, “The Shelter was established in 2004 to address animal welfare issues in Cape County. We are committed to working with other animal advocacy groups to better serve the needs of the County. We all want to see these cats and dogs heal and move on to find permanent homes.”
Honey will be available for adoption as soon as she receives a clean bill of health.
