COURT HOUSE — Is Fido feeling the recession?
When times are tough, some may have trouble keeping up with the expenses of caring for a pet.
With that in mind, the Campus Ambassadors Club at Atlantic Cape Community College delivered dog and cat food, treats, kitty litter and toys May 14 to Carriage House Dog Grooming & Doggie Day Care in Erma, where owners Melissa Atkinson and Rhonda Griffin have an animal foodbank.
Club members infused the bank with three pallets full of supplies collected from student and faculty donations over the past six weeks.
The club decided to help after reading a newspaper article indicating that some local pet owners were having financial trouble keeping their animals’ bowls and bellies full.
President Mary Beth Zenyuk said the decision to support the unique food bank fits in with the club’s mission to “bring campus and community together.” The club gives campus tours, holds events and supports varying causes.
This cause seemed particularly close to their hearts, as most members said they own one or several pets.
Campus Director of Operations Lisa Apel-Gendron has volunteered as advisor since she and students created the club about two years ago.
The foodbank, Griffin explained, started last year with client need and grew as donations continued.
“We are trying to prevent people from having to surrender their pets to a shelter,” she said.
Anyone who would benefit from the foodbank, or would like to donate, can call the Carriage House Dog Grooming and Doggie Day Care, 721 Seashore Road, at 898-3661.
There are no requirements to accept supplies.
