DIY Tractor Bed

By Megan Kummer

Designed and Executed by Steve and Gavin McGarrity
Steve McGarrity’s five year old son Gavin is a bit of a John Deere tractor fanatic. So one day, when Steve spotted a set of bunk beds disposed of at the curb, he had a tractor-inspired vision. The beds were in very good condition, and Steve decided to grab the set and bring it home with him to begin his latest DIY project – a John Deere Tractor bed for Gavin.
Here are the steps Gavin and Steve took in transforming the set into a new awesome addition to Gavin’s bedroom:
1. Steve purchased the lumber and organized the other necessary parts he would need to complete the project. He then got to work sanding and prepping the bed’s frame.
2. Next, he worked on cutting the lumber and framing the tractor bed. Gavin was by his side, working with his toy tools.
3. Steve was not originally sure what would be the best way to construct the tires of the tractor. In a trip to the hardware store, he found some precut wooden tabletops that were just the right size and proportions to serve as the tractor’s wheels. He prepped these to be painted and attached.
4. Next, Steve and Gavin got to work building the cab, the bucket, and the boom.
5. Painting the parts the characteristic John Deere green and yellow was the next step of the project.
6. The wheels were painted last.
7. After all pieces were ready, Steve disassembled the tractor bed in the garage so he could fit its components through the home’s doorways. He took its parts upstairs to Gavin’s bedroom for reassembly.
Gavin loves it and is the envy of the many fellow tractor-loving boys! This tractor bed project is a great example of a father-son DIY success.
