Whether you’re thinking of changing the foam of your cushions, or you’re looking to upgrade to new or reupholstered furniture, here are some foam fact to help you on whatever choice you decide.
Polyurethane foam is the most widely used product in the furniture industry today, coming in different grades, shapes and sizes.  Foam is sold by the density and compression measured by cubic foot by four numbers, for example, 1835.
The first two numbers, 18, is the density of the foam. It means the amount of foam used per square foot. The higher the number, the more foam is pumped into a square foot.  Number 18 is 1.8 pounds of foam used. The second two numbers are called the “ILD,” which is the compression measured by taking a 19″ x 19″ x4″ thick the amount of pounds it takes to compress it one inch.  The second two numbers, 35 took 35 lbs. of pressure to compress it one inch it by one inch.   Higher numbers indicate better foam and cost.
Furniture manufactures sell a standard grade of foam, which is 1835.  It feels great at first, but give it a year or less and the foam will start to break down. The compression labeled 35 is more like 25 or less. The higher numbers break down too, but not to the same degree. Some manufactures use different names,  but the process is the same. So when shopping, always look for the higher number in foam.  At Cape May Upholstery, we only stock the higher, premium grade foam. We are located on Rt. 47,  1/2 mile  north from Rt. 9 and across the street from Shannon Oaks.   We are happy to answer any questions, 609-886-6405.
