CLERMONT– Rainbow Pediatrics will offer a free lead testing clinic while also hosting their annual Christmas Show from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10 at their Clermont office, 2041 Rt. 9 S.
“All children should be tested for lead after nine months of age,” said Rainbow Pediatrician Dr. Thomas Dierkes. “Ever since the crisis in Flint, Mich. occurred, there has been a boost in awareness of how seriously silent lead poisoning can be. Most children who have it do not show any symptoms, which is why it is very important to be tested.”
Rainbow recently held a lead screening clinic during the Cape Regional Home and Health show at Avalon Elementary School. Dr. Dierkes and pediatric nurse Justyne Griser checked the children for elevated lead levels. All tests were negative.
Lead poisoning occurs when lead builds up in the body. This occurs after being constantly exposed to lead for months or even years – sources may include lead-based paint, lead-contaminated dust, air, water and soil. Even small amounts of lead can be harmful. Children under the age of six years old are especially vulnerable and it can severely affect their physical and mental development.
At high levels, lead poisoning can be fatal. Things that could cause lead to get into someone’s system are lead-based paint, and lead-contaminated dust, air, water and soil. Some of the symptoms of lead poisoning are abdominal pain/cramps, aggressive behavior, headaches, fatigue, kidney dysfunction and more.
“Lead poisoning, when discovered in a timely manner, is fully treatable, so it’s important to have your child tested,” emphasized Dr. Dierkes. Rainbow Pediatrics has the ability to run the test right in the office for most insurance carriers. However, select cases may require blood work from a lab.
Rainbow Pediatrics has the tools and expertise to address all of your child’s developing needs and keep them growing healthy and happy. They accept nearly all insurance and can schedule same-day appointments for sick children. Office hours at Rainbow Pediatrics are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. – noon.
