CAPE MAY — As of Aug. 11, Coast Guard Training Center Cape May had confirmed 19 cases of Swine Flu (H1N1 Virus) with all of the infected recovered and returned to duty.
Coast Guard spokesperson, Chief Warrant Officer Veronica Bandrowsky told the Herald 80 recruits and staff members were tested for Swine Flu with 64 results received with 16 test results pending. Of those, 19 were positive for H1N1.
Seven recruits are in the fever ward and two in the medical ward.
A total of 45 Coast Guard member received negative test results for Swine Flu.
Fifteen recruits tested positive for Swine Flu as well as four active duty members, who also have recovered and resumed duty.
One week ago, the training center had seven confirmed cases of Swine Flu, up from two cases, two weeks ago.
The base has instituted prevention measures such as hand washing and urging staff members to stay home and see a doctor if they have flu-like symptoms such as coughing and a high fever.
Recruits with flu symptoms were told to report immediately to Sick Hall to prevent spread of the illness.
