Keeping Your Eyes Healthy

By Sponsored

Your eyes are a crucial part of your overall health, which is why it’s important to protect and take care of them. You can’t help the fact that as you get older, your vision begins to deteriorate. However, there are many steps you can take to protect your eyes from diseases and other issues.
1. Eat eye-healthy foods.
You might already know that carrots are good for your eyes, but there are many other foods that also have vision benefits. Fruits and vegetables in general are great for your eyes. Dark, leafy greens such as spinach and kale contain antioxidants that help prevent cataracts. Studies have shown that grapes can lower your risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) as well as protect the retina against damage from oxidative stress. Omega-3 fatty acids, often found in fish such as salmon, tuna and halibut, can help improve dry eye.
2. Maintain a healthy weight.
Controlling your weight can help you avoid conditions that could eventually lead to vision loss, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. If you think it’s too late to get your weight under control, you’re wrong. It’s never too late to start eating right and exercising regularly, which can potentially reverse eye damage. Plus, studies have shown that those who lead an active lifestyle have a much lower risk of developing glaucoma.
3. Protect your eyes from the sun.
Too much exposure to the sun’s UV light can raise the risk of eye diseases such as cataracts and cancer. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses and broad-brimmed hats whenever you’re outside. Seek shade when you’re outside during the afternoon – this is when the sun’s rays are the strongest.
4. Rest your eyes.
If you work in front of a computer screen all day, remember the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen at something that is 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. This will help with eye strain and fatigued eyes.
5. Visit your eye doctor regularly.
Getting your eyes checked on a regular basis is the best thing you can do to keep your eyes healthy. You might think your eyes are fine, but a trained eye specialist can detect early signs of problems. Early detection means effective treatment to keep your eyes healthy for a lifetime!
