Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India.
The word “yoga” derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. Yoga has become so universal that the United Nations has designated June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
The general population of the U.S. is suffering more self-made illnesses than other counties – obesity, diabetes, stress-related heart disease and the opioid epidemic, just to name a few. Over the past 10 years, I have witnessed remarkable results when combining allopathic remedies with three yoga techniques: inversion, deep breathing and mindful eating. I have been using some basic yoga to help treat patients with heart disease, autonomic dysfunction, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and have noticed changes in both their physical and mental health.
Since my quadruple bypass surgery two years ago, I have also incorporated these same three yoga techniques in my daily routine. I honestly feel better in my 70s than I did in my 60s. I now realize that the future of medicine is to incorporate some traditional practices that can prevent and protect our bodies and minds, rather than simply treating illness when it arises.
So please, when you are home, try spending less time watching TV, eat more veggies, take two minutes to practice deep breathing and if you are feeling adventurous, hang upside down (simply let your head hang off of your bed). I guarantee you will feel better after one week – it’s just what the doctor ordered.
