CREST HAVEN — Freeholder Gerald Thornton announced that the Cape May County Health Department is observing March as National Nutrition Month by promoting good dietary habits.
“Eating right and being physically active aren’t just a “diet” or a “program” — they are keys to a healthy lifestyle,” said Thornton in a release. “With healthful habits, you may reduce your risk of many chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain cancers, and increase your chances for a longer life.”
The Board of Chosen Freeholders designated March as Nutrition Month in Cape May County and encourages all citizens to become concerned about their nutrition and the nutrition of others in the hope of achieving optimum health. Additionally, the Freeholders wish to increase the public’s awareness and understanding of the importance of good eating habits.
Health Officer Kevin Thomas added, “Dietary factors are associated with 4 of the 10 leading causes of death: coronary heart disease, some types of cancer, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. These health conditions are estimated to cost over $200 billion each year in medical expenses and lost productivity.”
The Health Department is involved in programs throughout the County in the education and promotion of healthy behaviors. The Woodbine Gardening Initiative, Rutgers Building Healthy Kids Coalition, The Chronic Illness Coalition and Cape Assist to name a few. The Health Department holds clinics for Child Health, Family Planning, WIC, Diabetes, Hypertension, Lipid and Cancer screenings and Special Child Health Services.
