COURT HOUSE – Mark your calendars for Oct. 23 and get your free flu shot. The Cape May County Department of Health is holding its popular drive-through flu shot clinic for everyone 14 years and older on Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kindle Ford Autoplaza in Cape May Court House (access Kindle Ford from exit 9 on the Garden State Parkway). Only one drive-through flu shot clinic is planned for this year.
Freeholder Gerald Thornton said, “Getting your flu shot each year is the best way to protect yourself from getting influenza.” Thornton added, “The drive-through flu shot clinic is a quick way to get your shot and get on with your weekend plans.”
For everyone’s safety, you must bring a completed consent form for each person receiving the flu shot. Consent forms are available at www.cmchealth.net, at the Department of Health and are in several local newspapers this week.
When coming to the drive-through, people should leave their pets at home and wear short sleeved shirts so the nurse can easily reach the upper arm. Also, residents who need assistance with transportation to get to the drive-through clinic can call Fare Free Transportation at 889-3700.
For the younger residents, there will be a free flu shot clinic for children aged 18 years and younger and their families on Wed., Oct. 19 from 2-6 p.m. at the Department of Health. The FluMist (nasal spray) vaccine will be available. Reminder: All children less than 5 years who attend daycare or preschool must have an annual flu shot to stay in school!
And for the older residents, a senior flu and pneumonia clinic will be held at the Lower Township Senior Center on Thurs., Oct. 20 from 1 – 4 p.m. High-dose and standard-dose flu and pneumonia shots are available at the senior clinic. Residents should bring Medicare and other insurance cards with them. Cost: standard dose flu vaccine is free; high-dose flu vaccine is either no cost or $45, depending on your type of insurance. For persons who pay $45, a receipt will be provided that can be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement. The pneumonia vaccine is $15.
For all County Flu Clinics, persons with a severe allergy to eggs, other vaccine components or who have been told by a doctor that they have had Guillain-Barre syndrome need to receive the flu vaccine from their personal physician. Persons with a severe allergy to latex or Thimerosal can receive a flu vaccine from the Department of Health, but not at the drive-through clinic.
Check the Department of Health’s website at www.cmchealth.net or call the flu hotline at 463-6581 for information on upcoming flu clinics.
