The Fishing Line:Shop or Fish? That is the question.

By Carolyn Miller

December isn’t all about shopping. As long as those stripers are around and the wind behaves, there can be many a nice day on the water. Bundle up and take extra gloves.
Sterling Harbor Marina reports that stripers are still biting in the Cape May Rips while drifting eels or live Spot. The best striper bite has been while chunking fresh bunker in the Delaware Bay.
Chopper bluefish are being caught while trolling around the 5 Fathom Bank area with Manns Stretch 25s and the like.
Togging remains excellent along the jetties and inshore wrecks. The surf has been on the quiet side with an occasional bluefish and striper caught.
Captain Ray on Tide Runner is still catching stripers on the fly but fishing has been tough. The big storm from last week left the waters very dirty and visibility way down, which is essential for catching fish on a fly.
The only really clean water for flyfishing has been on the back flats and up some of the small creeks. All fish caught this week were taken on chartreuse or bright flies, or on those that had a good amount of flash in them. Most of the fish have been on the small size. All were released.
