Feb. 4: The Fishing Line, Plan for spring

By Carolyn Miller

While the fishing these days is all about the weather, this weekend will bring one event that the weather can’t spoil.
Starting Wednesday, Feb. 4 and running through Sunday, Feb. 8, you can visit the Atlantic City Boat Show. That should energize you enough until the weather breaks.
Besides the multitude of boats, the AC show features a Fishing Marine Marketplace, a “show within the show,” featuring 440 booths showcasing all the latest in marine technology, engines, accessories, nautical gifts, rods, reels, and more.
Informative fishing seminars produced by Fisherman magazine held throughout the show are included with admission. Speakers include Nick Honachefsky discussing South Jersey’s best fishing locations, Jim Hutchinson sharing his fishing secrets, and Gary Caputi who will host a striped bass seminar.
Check out their Website at ACboatshow.com for the full schedule of seminars and special guest presentations.
The Starlight Fleet, Wildwood Crest, had success again on the water. Mike Jung, New York; Yong Yan, Edison; Kil Song, Englewood Cliffs; Angelo Ruvio, North Haledon; Ralph Molinaro, North Haledon; and Dennis Muhlenforth, Hockessin, Del., all caught the limit of sea bass up to 6.5-pounds.
A few days later, John Zema, Cliffwood; Steve Vesseli, Toms River; Robert Sussinno, Teaneck; and Pete May, Joe Zajko, Bruce Mattner and Greg DeFelice, Stony Brook, NY, also caught the limit of bass. Mike Jung, New York, brought in a 7.5-pound pool winner.
The crew reported winds at 20 knots NE and three to four foot seas but by afternoon the winds had diminished and the seas flattened. They were fishing about 60 miles offshore.
BoatUS reminds us that the Coast Guard will cease monitoring the EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) 121 MHz radio frequency Feb. 1. 406 MHz EPIRBs are now the standard for offshore distress signaling.
Tax News for boat owners:
Tax Extenders Act of 2008 offers a federal tax benefit with a deduction for state sales taxes. Boaters must choose either the state sales tax deduction or state income tax deduction on their federal tax return, you cannot take both.
For owners with a secured boat loan, mortgage interest paid on the loan may be deductible from your federal income taxes using the “second home” mortgage interest deduction for one primary home and one second home. You must itemize deductions on returns. A boat is considered a second home for federal tax purposes if it has a galley, a head, and sleeping berth.
Contact your lender for the amount of interest paid and enter it on line 11 on Schedule A along with the lender’s tax ID number. (BoatUS)
