What’s Happening in Ocean City

Ocean City’s Aviation Weekend features two exciting, free events. Action is set for Sat., Sep. 18 at the Municipal Airport, 26 and Bay Ave. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sun., Sept.19 from noon to 3 p.m. from 6th to 14th Sts. over the Boardwalk.
The airport grounds will be packed with unusual airplanes on its runway. Visitors will be able to inspect an array of antiques, World War II planes, Home Builts, Ultra Lights and Classics. Prizes will be awarded to outstanding entries at 2 p.m.
Rachel Reese, Miss Ocean City, Casey Cattie, Junior Miss Ocean City and Sadie Ford, Little Miss Ocean City will present the awards.
There will be air demonstrations over the field including a parachute jump by the U.S. Army’s Black Daggers, an advertising banner pick-up and Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue Demonstration. Bi Plane and helicopter rides will be available for a fee.
A spectacular model airplane demonstration that includes jets and helicopters is always a popular feature of the event. Some of the model jets attain speeds of 100 miles per hour while negotiating breath taking dives.
There will be a paper airplane contest at the airport for youngsters starting 11 a.m. between Hangers A and B. Age categories are 4-6, 7-8 and 9-12. Materials will be provided.
Winners will be awarded ribbons and top winners will be treated to rides in the Red Baron Airplane.
Other features include over 60 antique cars, refreshments for sale, face painters, greyhound dogs and a children’s mini-playground. The Airport Festival is sponsored by the City Experimental Aircraft Assn. Chapter 287 with assistance from members of the Airport Assn. and City.
An Aerobatic Stunt Flying Exhibition will thrill viewers on the beach and boardwalk on Sun., Sept. 19 from noon to 3 p.m. It will include the top stunt pilots in the world plus military demonstrations.
Scheduled to perform are many stunt super stars including Mike Miskus in the Lucas Oil Pitts, Kendal Simpson in a Pitts Model 12, Charlie Schwenker in the Extra 300, The Red Star Raiders Formation Team, fly bys from McGuire AFB’s C-17A
Globemaster III, a Coast Guard Search and Rescue Demonstration, the USAF F-16CJ Viper East Coast Demonstration Team and others.
The show is sponsored by the Ocean City Tourism Development Commission and the Ocean City Board of Realtors with Air Show Coordination and Operation by David Schultz Airshow, LLC.
The Ocean City Alumni Assn. holds its second annual Red and White Reunion this weekend. A highlight of the event is its downtown parade set for 11 a.m. Sat ., Sept. 18 at Sixth and Asbury Ave. Grand Marshal will be Gam Broadley, civic leader and World War II veteran, who will be featured on a float with a group of his fellow veterans. Gam is also a member of the L/Cpl. George L. Dramis Marine Corps. Color Guard that participates in our Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Sept. 11 Services.
Among the weekend events will be a pre-game barbecue rally at the Civic Center Parking Lot, 6th St. off Boardwalk on Fri. from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Fri. and the football game at Carey Stadium on Sat. at 7 p.m. with Atlantic City. For info visit ochsalumni.com.
The Ocean City Pops closes its season on Sept. 19 with Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play. The dynamic ensemble offers everything from jazz to folk to blues and classics. The Boardwalk Family Fun Fest is set for Sept. 18-19 featuring a juried Craft Show, Face Painters, Pony Rides at 11th St. Fest Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Annual Corvette Show is set for Sun. Sept., 26 featuring over 350 cars from every year the vehicles were manufactured. Show is from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The crowning of 2010 Dog of the Year will be held noon, Sun., Sept. 26 at the Port O’ Call Hotel. 15th and Boardwalk There will be a Canine Costume Contest following the crowning. Doggies will once again be able to enjoy a swim in the Hotel’s pool. Also scheduled is a Silent Auction. Dog of the Year T Shirts and Calendars will be for sale. Last Minute Reminder: Ocean City’ Office of Emergency Management will present its sixth Emergency Management Symposium, Thurs., Sept. 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center at Ocean City High School, Sixth and Atlantic Ave.
This program will feature a new Emergency Preparedness Video, “It Could Happen Here” produced and directed by Steve Trauger of Seriously Total Productions. Steve is also TV/AC Facility Engineer for Ocean City High School.
There will be vendor’s display tables with the video premier at 7:15 p.m. There will be an interactive discussion with Dan Skeldon, News Center 40. Jim Eberwine, retired Senior Weather Service Meteorologist, will address the public about the devastating effects a hurricane could have on the Jersey Shore and how to prepare for such an event.
Just Wig It! This is a Fund Raising event for Shaina Horton, a recent mother and Ocean City resident, diagnosed with Choriocarcinoma, a rare form of Cancer. The event is set for the Flanders Hotel, 11th and Boardwalk on Fri, Oct. 1 from 6 to 11 p.m.
Those who attend are invited to wear wigs to be donated to the American Cancer Society.
The evening includes dinner, dancing, beverages, a Silent Auction and entertainment. All proceeds go to the Horton/Palermo Fund to help cover treatments and family expenses. Shaina is currently undergoing treatment at Cooper Medical Center in Camden.

Walk for the Wounded, presented by Ocean City Home Bank, raises money to help wounded veterans. It will begin, Sat., Oct. 2 at 11:30 a.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Registration is10 a.m.
