STONE HARBOR – Sat., March 10, locals and visitors alike will line the 96th Street beach in Stone Harbor. These participants will resist bone chilling March winds and freezing temperatures as they stand side by side…in their bathing suits. To top it off, this crowd will willingly take a running leap into the frigid (42 degrees) Atlantic Ocean. And they’ll most likely return the next year to do it all over again. The Borough of Stone Harbor is announcing the second annual Stone Harbor Shiver, an event that many lovingly call a Polar Bear Plunge. The inaugural 2011 event was a huge success and the 2012 event looks to be even more successful.
Proceeds from this event will benefit Volunteers In Medicine of Cape May County, Friend in Need and the Cape May County Special Services School and sponsorship opportunities are available! Additionally vendors are invited to participate with designated booths at the Women’s Civic Club.
“I think the Shiver is a great promotional event for Stone Harbor and the local businesses,” said Fred’s Tavern owner Jimmy Hand. “We want to encourage store owners to participate whether it is through a sponsorship or even a vendor booth. It’s a great way to relieve owners of left over inventory and also feature new spring products.”
A pre-plunge party will be held on Friday night, March 9th at the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor beginning at 6 PM. participants can register and the party includes music, food and a silent auction. The cost for this event is $10 per person. Registration for the Shiver is $25 prior to March 9th for adults, $30 day of and $10 for students with Student ID. The first 150 registered will receive a long sleeved Stone Harbor Shiver t-shirt. The plunge goes off promptly at 12 noon.
Local restaurants will be holding post event parties. More information can be found on the Stone Harbor Shiver Facebook page.
