SOMA NewArt Gallery presents ‘Two Legged’ exhibition

By On Deck Staff

SOMA NewArt Gallery, 31 Perry Street, Cape May, presents “Two Legged Views of a Four Legged World,” running to Nov. 30.
Two regional artists—Terri Amig in Gallery One and Lynne Lockhart in Gallery Two, will present their painterly vision of our ‘beloved domestic animal kingdom.’
Beautifully rendered in light and color these paintings capture not only the likeness, but also the spirit, freedom, and charm of their four-legged subjects.
Bridging the gap between the civilized human world and the wild animal kingdom, domestic farm animals have always held a fascination for artists. For centuries, painters have explored the world of animals with a perspective ranging from portraiture to landscape.
Amig formally trained at The Corcoran School of Art, Washington, D.C., The Pennsylvania Academy of Art, and the California Institute of Art, continuing her critical studies at NABArts with artist Timothy Hawkesworth and at the Anderson Ranch in Aspen with Enrique Martinez Celaya.
After living in Los Angeles and Brooklyn, she currently lives and works in an old farmhouse near Cape May.
Lockhart’s intensely beautiful paintings embrace an empathy and love of life, a personal vision, romanticized, often serene and pastoral. Her paintings speak lovingly of her subjects, which form part of the broader natural world, sometimes vividly in the foreground, sometimes an element of the landscape.
Lockhart’s formal study includes the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C.
Undergraduate work in biology at Salisbury University influenced her vision of the natural world. Recently, her painting “Late Winter Sky” won the top prize at the American Academy of Equine Artists annual exhibition.
Her home and studio are located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
