COURT HOUSE — It will be a grand night for singing for the women of the Cape Shore Chorus at the Performing Arts Center of Middle Township Oct. 4, at 7:30.
That’s when the barbershop singing chorus will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in a special concert led by its new director, Patty Weeks of Tuckahoe. Ms. Weeks has had considerable experience in barbershop singing competition and has been an assistant director of the Cape Shore Chorus for seven years. She is the seventh director since the chorus was formed, the initial being Martha Cohen of Cape May.
Cheryl DeScala of Cape May Court House is the only member of more than 20 original singers who still performs with the group.
“While we enjoy singing, we also are family and enjoy being together and spending time with each other” she says.
The title of their show is “Still Crazy After All These Years!” and the program will include many popular barbershop songs.
Chorus President, Brenda Cunningham of Cape May Court House, said the concert, the tenth to be held at The PAC, will be a fundraiser for the chorus which was founded in 1988 by three women who moved into the county. The chorus is part of the Sweet Adelines International Organization, and has finished high in several competitions. New members are always being sought and interested parties may contact her at 463-8870, she said.
“Barbershop harmony is a unique American folk art and we all enjoy promoting it,” she added.
The Oct. 4 concert also will feature an added attraction in the singing quartet Lustre, which finished fifth in international competition. Tickets for the concert are $15 and may be reserved by calling 609-463-1924.
