COURT HOUSE — One of Cape May County’s most popular orchestras will be returning to the Performing Arts Center of Middle Township in a special Columbus weekend “Salute to Broadway” concert.
PAC director Kay Aspell has announced the booking of the Ocean City Pops Orchestra for a 7:30 p.m. performance of Broadway theater music Oct. 11. Also on the bill will be mezzo soprano Judy Kidwell, a winner of the third Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition who has performed with Peter Nero and his pops orchestra as well as with the Ocean City orchestra.
The Ocean City Pops orchestra, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary, has appeared frequently at PAC since the arts center was founded almost 23 years ago, but the upcoming date will mark the first time in three years that it has been on the stage of the 1,000 seat, state-of-the-art theatre.
Aspell said the concert has been scheduled at this time of year to accommodate the many music lovers who are unable to attend during the summer because they are busy attending to the tourism trade. Ticket prices are $30 and $25 and tickets may be reserved by calling 609-463-1924. There is free and abundant parking on the premises.
The orchestra’s conductor and artistic director is William Scheible who is marking his 27th year in that role. He has conducted more than 1,000 performances, 50 musicals and over 40 Broadway and operetta fully-staged productions. His widely-recognized credits also include having conducted the All-Philadelphia Concert band at Kimmel Center in 2003.
Kidwell is at home on the concert stage as well as in operas performances. She has sung internationally in South and Central America with prestigious orchestras in those areas.
