The calm bay waters in Wildwood Crest will come alive with huge roostertails of water coming off race boats as they skim across the water at 70 to 130 mph.
Championship powerboat racing is back in the Wildwoods!
October 1 and 2, race teams from the US and Canada will compete in Wildwood Crest on the bay area known as Sunset Lake. It is an action-packed weekend of inboard powerboat championship racing.
Each class of race boats will be racing to win the North American Championship title; they will also be competing for the prestigious New Jersey Governor’s Cup.
In addition to two full days of racing, the event offers a six-block marketplace of food, craft, and merchandise vendors as well as business displays. Event hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
At 10 a.m., the racing program will begin — inboard powered hydroplanes and flatbottoms will compete on a one-mile oval course in full-view of the spectator area. Fans will see race boats ranging in size and power from 12 to 23 feet in length and from 4-cylinder stock engines to big block modified engines strutting huge horsepower.
Approximately 70 race teams from both the United States and Canada will compete; many teams will be anxious to earn points as the Wildwood’s Hydrofest is one of the last events on the racing circuit for the sanctioning bodies — the American Power Boat Association and the Canadian Boating Federation.
The event is dual-sanctioned by both organizations, therefore, teams are eligible to earn national points for both APBA as well as CBF high-point awards.
The Hydrofest is free to spectators. However, if fans want to see the race boats up close and talk to the drivers and crews, pit passes can be purchased for $10 at the credentials tent located at the north pit gate, New Jersey and Nashville aves.
Fans can also purchase VIP tickets for $30; VIP tickets permit access to the VIP tent giving fans a prime viewing area with seating, access to the pits, and refreshments. (Closed footwear is required in the pits). Bleachers are available, but you can also bring your lawn chair or beach blanket.
In addition to parking on the side streets, visitors can park on the beach lots at Rambler and Ocean Ave.
The Hydrofest is hosted by the Greater Wildwood Tourism Improvement Development Authority, www.wildwoodsnj.com, the Borough of Wildwood Crest, and the Sunset Lake Hydrofest Association.
The Hydrofest is supported in part by a grant from New Jersey Department of State, Division of Travel and Tourism. www.Visitnj.org.
