Fab ‘50s in the Wildwoods

By On Deck Staff

The Wildwoods will be rockin’ and rollin’ during the 6th Annual Fabulous ‘50s Weekend, Oct. 16 through 8.
Presented by the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Wildwoods Doo-Wop Preservation League, the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority, the Greater Wildwood Hotel and Motel Association, the New Jersey Department of State Office of Travel and Tourism, and the Cities of Wildwood and North Wildwood, this island-wide, three-day celebration will pay tribute to the 1950s and will highlight the Wildwoods’ role in the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
The island’s rich mid-20th century heritage will also be showcased, as the Wildwoods have one of the largest collections of preserved mid-century “Doo-Wop” architecture in the country, making it the perfect place to celebrate the ‘50s culture.
The weekend is jam-packed with activities for the entire family, including a hip-shaking dance party at Friday night’s Record Hop and a free Fabulous ‘50s Street Fair featuring live music, contests, classic cars, tours, exhibits, memorabilia, as well as a variety of merchandise and food vendors on Saturday afternoon.
And lastly, don’t forget to purchase your tickets to the spectacular Saturday night concert featuring Dick Fox’s Golden Boys, starring Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Bobby Rydell.
The fun begins at 7 p.m. on Friday in the Wildwoods Convention Center with a bona fide record hop featuring the Jerry Blavat, who is guaranteed to get everyone moving and grooving to classic oldies.
Doors open at 6 p.m., and the record hop is from 7-11 p.m. Admission to the record hop is $12 plus tax.
On Saturday, start the day off by trying your luck with a game or two of bingo at the American Legion Hall, 4200 Atlantic Ave., from 9-11:30 a.m. Doors open at 8 a.m. All proceeds will go toward the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
Spend Saturday afternoon outdoors at the free Fabulous ‘50s Street Fair taking place at Fox Park, across from the Wildwoods Convention Center on Ocean Ave., from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
The street fair will include live entertainment throughout the day, featuring Shake, Rattle & Soul and Remember The ‘50s: A Tribute to the Drifters, The Platters and The Corvettes.
Be sure to check out the classic car show, exhibits of ‘50s antiques and pop-culture, the Doo-Wop Back-to-the ‘50s Bus Tour and a variety of vendors offering ‘50s memorabilia, many delicious food options and much more!
On Saturday evening the highlight of the weekend will take place during the big ‘50s concert in the stunning Oceanfront Arena inside of the Wildwoods Convention Center.
Dick Fox’s Golden Boys starring Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Bobby Rydell will take the stage and perform the timeless hits that made them three of the biggest names in the ‘50s.
Doors open at 6 p.m., and the live concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets to the show are $45 per person reserved seating and are only available through the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce.
