Civil War Film Comes to Museum, June 18

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – The 2014 war drama, “Field of Lost Shoes” will be shown 7 p.m., June 18 in the barn of the Museum of Cape May County.
Learn about the Battle of New Market and Gen. Franz Sigel, Commander of Union Forces, sent to the Shenandoah Valley to clear out any Confederate forces, then cross the Blue Ridge Mountains and strike Lee’s Army in the flank and read as Grant attacks his front.
All this is hoped for by official Washington, from the slow, cautious and inept Sigel who has been given command to help shore up the German/American vote in November to help reelect Lincoln.
Meet ex-U.S. Sen. And Vice President John C. Breckenridge, dubbed the New Stonewall, by the people of the Valley. Follow him as he brings together his 3 to 1 outnumbered forces and by swift matches and tactical movements, nullifies the enemy’s superior numbers. Eerily similar to Stonewall Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign. Ironically at 3 p.m. May 15, 1864, one year to the hour of Stonewall’s being buried in Lexington, Breckenridge will reach the apex of his army’s victory at New Market.
And we cannot forget the 25 corps of cadets from the Virginia Military Institute, some as young as 15, as they march down the valley pike from Lexington and charged into history through the “Field of Lost Shoes.” Of the 55 causalities among the cadets, 10 will survive. They shall suffer 24 percent causalities, the highest rate of all Confederate infantry forces in the battle.
This event is sponsored by the Cape May County Civil War Roundtable and the Museum of Cape May County. The museum is located at 504 Route 9 North. For additional information please contact Marty Runner at 609-536-8235 or the museum at 609-465-3535.
