SOMA NewArt Gallery will showcase two Cape May Artists: David Clemans and Marc Shenfield in the opening exhibition of SOMA’s 2009 Season “Cape May-Two Views.”
The Artists’ Opening Reception will be held on Saturday April 4, 6 to 9 p.m. and is open to the public. The exhibition continues to Sunday, May 3.
Two Cape May artists paint Cape May with uniquely different artistic views of this historic Victorian town and it’s natural environs.
In Gallery One, SOMA presents a retrospective show of oil paintings by David Clemans titled “River Run to the Sea,” a powerful rendition of Clemans’ commitment to the natural beauty of what he calls “our truly magical place.”
Much of Cleman’s work is done at his studio at Lindenwood, the historic colonial home on the road to Cape May Point. Here, surrounded and inspired by acres of lushly landscaped gardens, which he created from the original historic design, he pursues his passion for painting creating colorful worlds with a technique both powerful and subtle, layering paint with the skill of the Impressionist masters, but with a vitality and depth uniquely his own.
Gallery Two presents “Cape May in Detail,” an exhibition showcasing Marc Shenfield’s intimate images of Cape May, from weather-beaten shutters to beach boxes in the sand.
“They’re things you might look at but not really see,” Marc explains, “only after I study and scrutinize my environment to distill the essence of things, can I begin to portray them. Only then can I see and depict something in a truthful way, and hopefully share that discovery with others.”
Gallery hours are Thursday–Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., inside Carpenters Square Mall, Perry Street and Carpenters Lane, Cape May, somagallery.net.
