Avalon to Celebrate Fourth of July Weekend with Fireworks and Concert

AVALON – The Borough of Avalon will celebrate Independence Day with a five-day community celebration that will include the largest fireworks display in South Jersey, a world-renowned symphony concert, pop music concerts, a boat parade, and other activities. The family events begin June 30 and culminate with the fireworks display on the 30th Street beach at dusk July 4.
“Avalon has created many fun, family activities for what truly is the biggest weekend at the Jersey Shore all season long”, said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi. “We are excited to present a big variety of special events that are all absolutely free for adults and children to enjoy during the week and on the July 4 holiday”.
Avalon is once again proud to be the summer home of the Bay-Atlantic Symphony which will present a free, patriotic concert inside Avalon Community Hall July 4, at 7:00 p.m. The Symphony has developed a special “Broadway on the Boards” concert that will feature selections from “Oklahoma”, a “West Side Story” medley, selections from “Phantom of the Opera”, “Washington Post March”, “Stars and Stripes Forever”, and the “1812 Overture”. The symphony concert is free and open to the public with seating on a first come, first served basis. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Bay-Atlantic Symphony will return to Avalon to perform two concerts presented by the Avalon Free Public Library on July 18th, and again Aug. 15.
The Borough of Avalon and the Bay-Atlantic Symphony is honored to welcome Commander Corry Judeman Prestidge, United States Navy (ret.) as the guest conductor for the concert. Commander Prestidge’s decorated Naval career includes earning her Wings of Gold in July, 1996, two successful deployments to the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, along with numerous deployments to Central and South America in support of counter narcotics operations. She is married to Captain Todd Prestidge, the Commander of the United States Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, NJ. The USCG Auxiliary will have an exhibit at Avalon Community Hall as part of the concert event.
Immediately following the symphony concert will be the largest fireworks display in South Jersey on the 30th Street beach. Avalon will present a dazzling display of fireworks launched from a barge and set to patriotic music. The music that accompanies the fireworks display will be simulcast on radio station WCZT-FM, 98.7..the Coast.
The Independence week celebration begins June 30 with a performance by the 63rd Army Band to be held at Veterans Plaza at 21st Street and Dune Drive. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free to the public. The Band will perform patriotic and traditional pop music.
July 1, a “Battle of the Mummers Bands” parade begins at 6:00 p.m. at Avalon Community Hall and proceeds to Veterans Plaza. Patriotic bicycles and walkers are invited to join in the parade. July 3, the Avalon Department of Recreation will present family field races, water activities, and family fun events at the 10th Street field starting at 10:00 a.m. The event is free, and no pre-registration is required.
July 4, a full day of activities begins with the annual Avalon Boat Parade. Boaters are encouraged to decorate their boats in a patriotic theme and participate in the parade to be held at 11:00 a.m. Boats will gather at the Avalon Yacht Club no later than 10:45 a.m. in advance of the parade. Registration is being held at Avalon Community Hall weekdays in advance of the boat parade from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. For additional information, call (609) 967-3066.
Also, July 4, Avalon will present two free concerts at the 30th Street pavilion. “Loud ‘N Klear” will perform from 1:00-3:00 p.m, and “The Star Band” will perform from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Immediately after the second concert, the Avalon Department of Recreation will present fun, free family activities on the 30th Street beach and adjacent to Avalon Community Hall including bounce houses, games, face painters, balloon artists, surprise special guest characters, and other fun family activities.
