It Takes a Village to Support a Cutter

The Lawrence Lawson, commissioned in 2017, is stationed in Cape May.

It takes a huge team to support a Coast Guard Cutter. Newly formed civilian group “Lawson’s Pride of Somer’s Point” is stepping up to assist the officers, crew, and families of this massive ship, commissioned in 2017 and docked in Cape May.

This volunteer organization is comprised of veterans and residents committed to helping Lawrence Lawson’s officers, crew members, and their families while they are stationed in Cape May. They will provide funds for “Family Readiness” programs, a key component of family morale.

On Dec. 17 the group delivered 30 ham dinners with all the fixings, including greens, potatoes, fresh breads, and other sides to the families.

Christmas meals are loaded onto the cutter.
Coast Guard members and volunteers stand abreast of the Lawrence Lawson on Dec. 17.

They welcome every new family that comes aboard Lawrence Lawson by sending a box of diapers and other essential items.

“We want to show them how much we appreciate the job they do protecting our waters,” said Janice Johnston, president of the group. “The discussions gave us a better understanding of how the Coast Guard protects our waters. Meeting and spending social time with the entire Crew of 27 men along with some of their wives who live on base was such a treat. They come from all over the country and are stationed here in Cape May.”

Find Lawson’s Pride of Somer’s Point every Friday night in the summer selling merchandise at the Somers Point’s beach concerts, and at events like Bayfest and Good Ole Days.

For more information, email them at Lawsonspridesp@gmail.com or Janice Johnston, president at 609-214-6164 or Greg Sykora, vice president, at 609-517-2529.
