WILDWOOD – The Cape May Islanders, a Special Olympics co-ed basketball team, will be competing against other New Jersey-based teams March 29-30, with an eye on winning the gold as state champions.
According to Jeanette Axelsson, whose son Axel is on the team, the nine players have been playing every weekend since January. The Islanders won the state championship in 2023. They are sponsored by Wildwood Elks Lodge 1896.
The Islanders will be playing the Bancroft Stars at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at the Wildwood Convention Center, followed by the Somerset Tigers at 1:15 p.m. On Sunday, March 30, they will compete against the RCSJ Fanatics at 11:45 a.m. at the Crest Pier. The tournament is taking place at various locations in Wildwood.
