WILDWOOD – The Cape May Islanders, a Special Olympics co-ed basketball team, won the gold as Division 12 state champions in a tournament held March 29-30 in the city.

According to Jeanette Axelsson, whose son Axel is on the team, the nine players have been playing every weekend since January. The Islanders also won the state championship in 2023. They are sponsored by Wildwood Elks Lodge 1896.

The Islanders beat the Bancroft Stars 29-19, the Somerset Tigers 43-28 and the RCSJ Fanatics 19-7 to win the title.

Tom Hennessy has been coaching the team for the past 10 years, assisted by co-coach Maria Vasser.
