COURT HOUSE – A Cape May County grand jury handed up six indictments Jan. 28.
The abbreviation CDS below stands for controlled dangerous substance. A “certain person” charge can be brought against individuals whose previous convictions bar them from having weapons.
Oscar Correa-Galeano was indicted for knowingly exhibiting a false government ID and theft, both counts in the third degree. The indictment also contained a fourth-degree count for resisting arrest.
Christopher Illa was named in a single count indictment for fourth-degree obstruction of the administration of law.
Patricia L. Sheeks was indicted on one count of third-degree theft related to an incident in Middle Township in June.
Hakeem Denby faces a count of first-degree murder, along with two counts of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, a handgun in each count, and a final second-degree count for certain person. Denby was convicted in 2021 of unlawful possession of a weapon in Cumberland County.
James V. Comito was indicted for third-degree possession of a CDS, cocaine.
Bernard Burton was named in a nine-count indictment: two counts in the second degree for unlawful possession of a weapon, a Glock Model 23 .40 caliber handgun, and possession of a weapon while committing a CDS crime. The CDS crime involved three counts of possession with intent to distribute a CDS. The controlled substances were cocaine, heroin and alprazolam. There was also a third-degree count for possession of a prescription legend drug and another for certain person, a charge related to Burton’s failure to obey a court order and turn in a firearm. The indictment also contained two fourth-degree counts, for possession of a prohibited weapon, large capacity magazines, and possession with intent to distribute drug paraphernalia.
