Well, it’s cold and windy, storms are blowing through, and yet we still have fishing going on. Last week I mentioned the largest blackfish that I had heard of this season, a 16-pounder, so you know what that means. This week I have an even larger blackfish to report on. Boats in the area that are still running are getting harder to find, but there still are a few. Let’s check out what went on recently.

Capt. Tom, who runs the Fishin’ Fever out of Cape May, has a solid reputation of putting his fares on some big blackfish. This belief in his abilities is well deserved since the state record blackfish, one weighing 25.8 pounds, was caught aboard his boat by Chris Sullivan on Dec. 20, 2020. That fish beat the previous state record of 25.37 pounds that was set in 2015 by Frank LaMorte. Oh, that record was also set aboard Capt. Tom’s boat.

The big fish for this year, so far, doesn’t approach those weights. It’s still a highly respectable double-digit fish that any of us who enjoy pursuing blackfish would be very happy to include in our resumes. The catch was made right before the latest storm paid us a quick visit. The fish was a big male that weighed in at 17.5 pounds and was caught by Frank Mihalic. This represents a personal-best blackfish for Frank. The best part is that after weighing the fish, and getting some photos, the fish was released to swim another day. And maybe give another angler the chance to experience a great catch.

The Starfish got out before the recent weather got wet and was rewarded with a good day of fishing. Some nice blackfish were caught, which made getting out before the rain worthwhile.

Friday’s trip was also another good day, as the fishing and weather were both favorable. A highlight of that trip was the limit that was caught by Jerry Rau. Four nice fish will put some nice filets in the freezer. I want to thank Jerry, a steady contributor here, for the report and picture that he submitted. Jerry, good luck on your future trips and please keep those reports coming this way.

The Starfish is planning on sailing through January, so remember to check them out online, on Facebook or by calling 609-263-3800 to get a reservation for a seat at the rail.

I was glad to be able to get out to the recent Wildwood Fishing and Boating Expo. It was a good day to renew some old acquaintances and make some new ones. Checking out the boats, as well as looking at some new gear, is always interesting. It really gets you in the mood, but then you leave the building and it’s raining with 20 mph winds, and the warning of stronger gusts to come. It’s all good, though, since we can still head out for blackfish or, if you’re able, you can go south to more fishable climes. I have no problem targeting blackfish, but that will even end for a time and we’ll then look towards spring. We’ll also be waiting to see the new fishing regulations. Let’s hope those are favorable for all involved, whether you’re looking at it from either a recreational angler or a captain’s perspective.

Don’t forget that the Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series is coming to Atlantic City for its 37th year, and marks a return to an in-person show. The last three years featured nationally televised seminars. It will be held on Feb. 3 at the Resorts Casino Hotel Ballroom. Local captains who are scheduled to speak about near shore, inshore and offshore fishing are Al Crudele III and Tom Daffin. Other New Jersey captains are also scheduled to appear, so the whole coastal area will be represented. Attendees will receive a bucket of boating products, a chance to learn from some of the best saltwater anglers and an opportunity to win some nice door prizes. Check out their Facebook page for more information.

There’s still some good fishing out there, so good luck if you get out, take care, and I’ll see you around.
