First Day of School

By Theodore Bryan, Court House

To the Editor:

The first day of school provides memories that we all share. Some of the things that we remember are new school clothes, bookbags, sneakers, and so on. Excitedly anticipating the adventures that the new year was going to bring. Moms, dads, and other family members taking “first day” pictures. The freshly scrubbed school; teachers in the halls directing traffic; announcements blaring over the intercom greeting our arrival; anxiously reuniting with friends. These images are part of who we are.

A successful first day is not possible without the involvement of many groups and individuals. We recognize the churches and community organizations who host “back to school” celebrations and provide free school supplies. The teachers who plan lessons on their own time and often shop for their classrooms. Administration and support staff who make sure that everything is in order for the doors to open. Most importantly, the parents who do all that they can to get their children to walk through those doors.

We all pray together as families and as a community that our schools are inviting, academically stimulating, fun and safe. We should commit ourselves to encourage our children to do their best. Also, we must do our best to give positive support to our schools, as they carry out the essential mission of educating our youth. Have a great school year!
