WILDWOOD – The Fire Department quickly knocked down a fire in a two-family dwelling in the 100 block of East Roberts Avenue on Wednesday afternoon, May 22, rescuing a dog and a cat in the process.
The department got the call at 3:36 p.m. Fire Chief Ernie Troiano III arrived on the scene and reported smoke showing from the rear and roof area of the house. Firefighters from Squad Co. 3 began to fight the blaze while simultaneously conducting searches of the building; it was quickly determined that all occupants were out.
A dog was removed from the dwelling by Wildwood police officers, and a cat was also found and attended to by Wildwood firefighters.
The fire, in the roof area at the rear of the building, was under control in about 20 minutes. Damage was estimated at $50,000.
The blaze was investigated by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office and determined to be accidental, from roofing work being conducted at the property.
The Wildwood Fire Department was assisted by North Wildwood Ladder Co. 2, the Wildwood Crest Fire Department and the Rio Grande Fire Department. The Wildwood Police Department and Wildwood Crest EMS also assisted at the scene; the Stone Harbor Fire Department provided coverage during the incident. Firefighter rehab was provided by the Middle Township Ambulance Corps. Fire units were at the scene for about two hours.
