To the Editor:
I crab practically every day. Last week I caught three crabs, brought them home and cooked them. Noted an off smell while cooking. There was a yellow foam ring that appeared on the side of pot that had an awful smell when cleaning.
Crabs had a very off taste, only ate half a crab, threw rest away. Wrote to DEP and asked if there was any testing done on crabs and was informed the following.
“There has not yet been formal testing of crabs in this area in response to the spill but we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Without testing, we would not recommend people eat crabs from the area impacted by raw product. Very best, Kathryn Ford”
There are many people crabbing the intracoastals every day and there is no signage to possible problems. I don’t know if they used chemical dispersants to clean up the spill [referring to an 800-gallon gas spill at a Wildwood Wawa in July. Ed. note], as that could be a huge problem.
I was driving into Wildwood next day when they had lane shut down and were working in drains. There was a huge fresh asphalt smell, I don’t know if that’s the chemicals they used or what.
But this could be a huge problem.
