Considering Botox for Your TMJ Pain?

By Chrissy Boothroyd and Evan Cauterucci, DMD with Cape May Dental

Do you suffer from TMJ, facial pain or migraines? Botox® may be the solution to your problems.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ or TMD) occurs when there is abnormal function of the Temporomandibular Joint. This can be caused by repetitive behaviors such as teeth clenching or grinding, gum chewing and even stress, which lead to enlargement of the head and neck muscles, resulting in significant pain. Symptoms include grinding, clenching, migraines, earaches, facial pain, and damage to teeth. Traditional treatments include mouth guards and full mouth reconstructions. If you can’t tolerate a mouth guard or want to go through the time and expense of a full mouth reconstruction, Botox® may be an option for you.

Botox® uses trigger point injections in the head and neck muscles and can be very effective treatments for TMJ, headaches and facial pain. Botox® blocks nerve signals that cause muscle movements, relaxing the muscles and reducing or eliminating pain. The injections only take a few minutes and will last approximately 3 months. You can expect to see results within 5 – 14 days following the procedure. After 2 – 3 treatments with Botox®, some patients lose the habit which contributes to the TMJ issues. You may also notice that wrinkles disappear following treatment.

Cape May Dental also offers Dermal Fillers (such as Juvederm®) and Botox® for other areas. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Evan to determine if you are a candidate for this treatment. At Cape May Dental, our goal is to help you look and feel your best.
