WOODBINE – Woodbine Elementary School joined with schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day Oct. 5, 2016.
Approximately 75 students from WES joined the “Walking School Bus” along with parents and guardians, teachers, and community leaders including State Trooper Diana Wamsher, the School Resource Officer from Woodbine Barracks.
Borough Council member David Bennett and his pre-school friend Noah were among those who joined walking and celebrating, while Mayor Pikolycky greeted students upon arrival and later read his proclamation during morning announcements.
Upon arrival, all student participants received a free gift provided by the Safe Routes to School Program and adult participants received coffee mugs from Cross County Connection.
Walk to School Day events such as Woodbine’s raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools, and the broader community.
“I very much enjoyed being part of this annual event which also promotes the community wellness goals of the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign,” added Mayor Pikolycky. “The entire community benefits if there is less traffic congestion because parents don’t have to drive their children to school. And of course, walking in a group promotes both the socialization and safety of those students.”
The event was organized by the WES Health and Safety Team in cooperation with the Safe Routes to School Program.
