WILDWOOD – A sea of pink found its way to Wildwood’s City Hall when the municipality kicked off October as Breast Cancer Awareness month. October 1 found City Hall employees awash in pink – pink shirts, that is, the color that has come to symbolize the fight against the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women.
“Wildwood employees are proud to have begun an annual tradition of wearing pink to show their support of breast cancer awareness,” said Commissioner Pete Byron.
Leading the way in bringing breast cancer awareness to the city is the Wildwood Fire Department. By selling pink t-shirts emblazoned with the fire department’s logo, firefighters hope to raise awareness and funds to help fight the disease.
According to the American Cancer Society, a woman living in the United States today has a 1 in 8 chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Before the end of 2013, almost 300,000 cases of invasive breast cancer and in situ breast cancer will be diagnosed and approximately 40,000 women will die in 2013 from the disease. Only lung cancer causes more cancer deaths in women.
“The city was honored to be able to show its support for breast cancer awareness,” said Mayor Ernie Troiano. “For us, wearing pink is only a symbol, but for those who fight this disease, it’s a daily battle. The city supports those who fight that battle.”
