TRENTON Senator Jeff Van Drew urged members of the community who have experienced problems with Verizon’s landline and internet service to attend a public hearing taking place Aug. 4 at Estell Manor Elementary School.
“It is so important for people who are experiencing problems with their service to come out and have their voices heard. These issues have a serious impact on the daily lives of residents and business owners in our region and one of the best ways to get them addressed is to explain in detail the problems to state regulators,” said Senator Van Drew (D-Cape May/Cumberland/Atlantic). “I expect that the BPU will hear from families, business owners, educators and local and emergency officials from the region. I look forward to speaking with residents at the meeting and hearing more about the issues that exist.”
The meeting to be held by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities is in response to a request by Senator Van Drew for a public hearing in the 1st Legislative District on Verizon’s landline and internet service problems. The senator made the request in a letter he sent to BPU President Richard Mroz in February, citing the need for the BPU to understand the public safety and quality of life issues caused by inadequate landline service in South Jersey.
“People in Western Atlantic and Cumberland counties are being negatively impacted by inadequate service and it is literally creating technology access issues. It affects everything from medical devices to computers used by students and businesses,” said Senator Van Drew. “It is the responsibility of Verizon to provide customers with landlines that are functionally properly and that is not happening. This hearing is an important opportunity for the public to speak directly to state regulators and Verizon about the need for improvements.”
The service problems reported by residents range from static and service interruptions to complete loss of service, and are the unfortunate results of poorly-maintained copper infrastructure and the failure of the company to address the problem in a comprehensive way.
The hearings are scheduled for Aug. 4, 2016, at 3:30 p.m. & 6:30 p.m. at the Estell Manor Elementary School, 128 Cape May Ave, Estell Manor, NJ 08319. Senior officials from BPU and Verizon are expected to attend.
