COURT HOUSE – The Cape May Court House branch of the Cape May County Library will be holding an assortment of activites and events in June.
County Library Hosts Lecture on Native Shrubs
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend a lecture titled “Native Plants for Wildlife: Shrubs” presented by naturalist Pat Sutton on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 6 p.m. The program will take place at the Main Branch of the Cape May County Library located at 30 E. Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.   
 
Sutton will showcase native shrubs and the birds, butterflies, moths and other creatures that are dependent upon or will benefit from the shrubs.
 
Sutton has studied the natural world for thirty years. She and her husband, Clay Sutton, wrote the landmark book, Birds and Birding at Cape May, an in-depth result of their efforts over many years documenting and protecting the migration and the Cape May area that they so love. Sutton’s wildlife garden is a teaching garden included on many tours and featured in programs and workshops she teaches.
County Library Hosts Picnic Cooking Demonstration
The Cape May County Library invites the public to “Picnics: Appetizers, Side Dishes and Desserts” presented by Chef John Webersinn on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 1 p.m.  The demonstration will be held at the Main Branch Library located at 30 E. Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House.
 
Join Chef John as he demonstrates spectacular appetizers, mouth watering side dishes and pièce de résistance desserts. Chef  John will present foods that will help you have the perfect picnic.    
 
As the owner of Time to Dine Personal Chef Services, Chef John provides fresh on-site prepared meals for any occasion serving from 2 to 200. A graduate of the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College, Chef John’s extensive and eclectic culinary skills are a result of his work experiences in diners, country clubs, casinos and gourmet restaurants.  
 
This program is free, however, space is limited; therefore registration is required.
County Library Hosts Seminar on eBooks
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend a seminar on how to download eBooks on Monday, June 13th at 6 p.m. The program will take place at the Main Library located at 30 Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House. If you would like to learn about eBooks and eReaders stop by for a free tutorial on the basics of both.
 
The Cape May County Library now offers eBooks from Overdrive that can be downloaded to an eReader, mobile device, as well as, a computer or laptop for FREE.
 
Please note before coming to this class: Overdrive does not work with the Kindle, but you can still get eBooks on your laptop or desktop. If you have a Nook, Nook Color, Kobo, or Sony eReader, you will have to bring your own laptop with WiFi capability, since eBooks will need to be transferred to your device.  If you are planning to use a mobile device with Android technology or an Apple product, such as an iPhone, iTouch, or iPad, Overdrive has an app you can easily download without a laptop. 
 
Librarian Melissa Brisbin is the presenter for this workshop. She is well versed with downloadable eBooks and audiobooks, as well as, eReader devices and is the librarian in charge of Overdrive’s collection development for Southern New Jersey.  Also, Melissa was recognized as an American Library Association’s Emerging Leader for her library work and knowledge.

County Library Presents Demonstration On Cooking With Berries
Come to the Cape May County Library for another spectacular Cape Cuisine presentation by Chef Mark Kalla.  The demonstration on cooking with berries will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 25th at the Main Library located at 30 E. Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House
 
Chef Mark Kalla will demonstrate techniques and provide examples of cooking with berries including berry salads, berry desserts and berry dressings. Participants will be able to sample the foods that are prepared.
 
Chef Mark Kalla is the head chef at Green Cuisine Restaurant in Stone Harbor, runs the Avalon Elementary School cafeteria and teaches culinary instruction to children during the summer.
 
This program is free, however, space is limited; therefore registration is required.
County Library Offers Boating Safety Course
The Cape May County Library is hosting a Boating Safety Course presented by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary on June 7th and June 14th.   The course is from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Main Library located at 30 E. Mechanic St. in Cape May Court House.
 
The Boating Safety course will cover a wide variety of information. Topics include:
 
· General information about boats and maintenance
· Information on preparing for safe and enjoyable outings
· Navigation rules and aids to navigation
· Guidelines for operating your boat or PWC safely
· What to do in case of boating emergencies
· State-specific laws and regulations you must follow
 
The information provided applies to recreational watercraft such as powerboats, Personal watercrafts, sailboats and boats that are paddled. Upon completion, you will receive a boating education certificate. Both classes must be attended to receive your certificate.
 
Registration is required and a fee of $45 must be paid at the first class. Please make checks payable to U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 8-3.
County Library Offers Intermediate Photography Workshop
The Cape May County Library is pleased to offer an intermediate series of workshops on photography.   These workshops, under the tutelage of Mike Hannisian, will be held on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. beginning June 8, 2011 at the Main library located at 30 Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
 
This four session Intermediate Nature Photography course is intended for people who have a basic understanding of photography and now want to expand their knowledge.  There will be an emphasis on shooting nature subjects such as birds, butterflies, dragonflies, other insects, landscapes, etc.
·Session one will cover equipment selection and general usage, including a review of the three elements of exposure, basic composition and what equipment is most appropriate for various types of wildlife photography.
·Session two will cover field techniques, including tripod usage, exposing for and following flying subjects and how to properly handle equipment to create sharp images.
·Session three will cover converting RAW images in Adobe Lightroom. These techniques will also apply to Adobe Photoshop.
·Session four will cover Lightroom development and enhancement techniques. Again, the techniques will be equally applicable to Photoshop.
 
Mike Hannisian leads gentle but serious nature photo learning expeditions around Cape May Point for the Cape May Bird Observatory.  Many of Hannisian’s images along with various articles, reviews and other writings are on his website: www.mike-hannisian.com.  Hannisian has had 13 winning images in the last two Valley Land Fund’s biannual Wildlife Photography Contests and won Best of Contest in the 2008 South Texas Shootout Division. 
 
Space is limited; therefore, registration and a valid library card are required to attend. 
County Library Hosts “Beachcomber’s Biology” Program
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend “Beachcomber’s Biology” with Sue Ann Slotterback on Tuesday, June 21st at 6 p.m. The program will take place at the Main Library located at 30 E. Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
Every day is a good day to walk the beach and explore the interesting treasures the tide has washed ashore. We’ll take a detailed look at some of the common, and not-so-common, flora and fauna of the beach and intertidal areas. If you have an interesting beach treasure, please bring it with you.
Sue Ann Slotterback grew up combing Cape May County beaches. For over thirty years, Slotterback has been a professional naturalist and outdoor education specialist for Girl Scouts, the Ocean Discovery Aquarium, the Philadelphia Zoo, the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the NJ Marine Sciences Consortium and NJ Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May.
County Library Hosts Butterflies and Dragonflies Lecture
The Cape May County Library invites the public to attend a lecture on “Butterflies and Dragonflies of June” Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 2 p.m. The program will take place at the Main Branch of the Cape May County Library located at 30 E. Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
Naturalist Pat Sutton will host the talk that will cover natural history and identification of butterflies and dragonflies followed by a leisurely outdoor walk, weather permitting, to a nearby natural area. Cape May County is home to hundreds of varieties of butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies.

She and her husband, Clay Sutton, wrote the landmark book, Birds and Birding at Cape May, an in-depth result of their efforts over many years documenting and protecting the migration and the Cape May area that they so love. The lecture titled, “Native Plants for Wildlife: Spring-blooming Perennials”, presented by naturalist Pat Sutton will take place at 6 p.m. at the Main Branch of the library located at 30 E. Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.

County Library Presents Film Noir Night
The Cape May County Library invites the public to “Film Noir Night” on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 6 p.m. at the Main Library located at 30 E. Mechanic St. in Cape May Court House.
Join us at the library for a viewing of “The Big Heat” © Columbia Pictures. Take one corrupted police force, one sultry dame and one determined detective; throw them altogether to make one unforgettable story. The film stars Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame, Lee Marvin and is directed by Fritz Lang.
Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. Many of the stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression.
County Library Offers Teen Drama Program
The Cape May County Library will host a series of drama workshops for young adults ages 12 to 18 during the month of June. The series will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 1, 8, 15 and 22 at the Main Library located at 30 Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House.
The workshop is under the tutelage of John Pekich, Theatre Professor from Atlantic Cape Community College. The workshops will encompass acting, play writing and related topics.
Class size is limited; therefore, registration and a valid library card are required to attend.
