CREST HAVEN – Cape May Tech’s Maritime History & Leadership class and instructor, Ms. Andrea Krautler, visited the Coast Guard Training Center Cape May and Station Cape May. Mike Bryan, junior, of Cape May Court House, said, “We all enjoyed the small boat station and the boat ride on the 45’ patrol boat. The trip was a great experience because it gave us the opportunity to meet and talk to individuals in the Coast Guard.” The students gained first – hand knowledge of the 11 Coast Guard missions discussed in the classroom.
The new elective course is an introduction to the United States Coast Guard and to military service in general. The course includes an overview of USCG history, missions, organization, shipboard and shore station operations, and traditions from its inception to the present. The historical missions segment will reinforce studies in American History from 1790 through modern times, with emphasis being placed on the role of the USCG in armed conflicts involving the United States. The course also covers leadership styles and utilizes case studies in military leadership.
