Tastiness goes back more than 40 years in Avalon

By Jim Vanore

Circle Pizza is an appetizing Avalon landmark, anchoring 21st and Dune Drive (near the Veterans Plaza) since 1978.
Prior to that it was on Ocean Drive and known as Avalon Pizza since 1968.
“The business was started by my grandfather, Mario Bozzella,” said today’s owner/proprietor Andrew Buchanan, “along with my parents Paul and Eleanor, my aunt Camille and Uncle Joe.”
So tastiness goes back more than 40 years in this family-owned business.
Their secret is easily definable.
“Consistently good food at fair prices,” Buchanan emphasized.
Circle Pizza just went through a big face life, bringing what Buchanan calls an open-air dining experience.
“It’s a pizzeria with flair,” he said. “Diners can sit outside, yet watch the ballgame on the large TVs inside.
Although known for more than its pizza (great sandwiches, salads, and cheeseburgers cooked over an open flame and served on ciabitta bread), Circle Pizza is especially proud of its massive 25-by-18-inch rectangular pizza, called “The Bailout.”
“It’s a $25 pie, plus toppings,” said Buchanan, “but it feeds 18 people.”
A good, old, plain cheese pizza is the most popular though, followed by pepperoni in second place.
Buchanan also owns The Real Enchilada, now in its fourth season at 224 21st St.
“I always liked Mexican food, too,” he said, “and I saw a need for an authentic Mexican restaurant in town.”
The Real Enchilada specializes in homemade tortillas, enchiladas and burritos—chicken, pork, beef, or fish.
In explaining the difference, Buchanan said that burritos are made with a flour tortilla, and are ‘hoagie-like,’ in that they are hand held.
Enchiladas are made with a corn tortilla and come with a platter of rice and beans.
“Sauce separates the two,” he noted. “The enchilada you eat with a knife and fork.”
Whatever your mood—Italian or Mexican, Circle Pizza and The Real Enchilada have hours that are convenient to any activity.
Circle pizza also delivers. Their hours are Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 a.m.; Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to midnight. Call 609-967-7566.
