Ocean City’s Sons of the American Legion Squadron 524 has donated $350 to the town’s Girl Scout Troop 41014 to help two Silver Award teams build and maintain environmental projects.
The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. It gives young ladies the chance to demonstrate leadership, organization, determination and dedication to improving their community.
The Silver Award team of Sofia Keir, Katie Muller and Ashley Sperduto-Meng completed a project reminding motorists to slow down and watch for Diamond Back Terrapin turtles. The team built and installed turtle shaped signs along busy roadways where turtles are often struck during their nesting season from May through August.
The second team, consisting of Brandi Bowers, Hannah Martin and Anna Wisham, planted 100 native species plants in three gardens located at Ocean First Bank on Asbury Avenue and at the Bayside Center. Specific plants were chosen because they provide food and nesting habitats for local and migrating birds, insects and pollinators, including the Monarch Butterfly.
Additionally, the two Silver Award teams created and distributed a brochure aimed at educating local landscapers and the general public about the benefits of choosing plant species that are native to Cape May County. Many native plant species are drought resistant and require less fertilizer and fewer pesticides, cutting down the amount of pollutants washed into waterways and the ocean during rainstorms. The root systems of these plants help rainwater penetrate soil and reduce flooding.
The Troop is also looking forward to adding some beautiful native species plants at the new Ocean City American Legion Post building soon to open at 46th Street and West Avenue.
