Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit Demonstrates to Cape Tech Students

CREST HAVEN — Recently, the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit visited the Cape May County Technical High School. Students in the Law and Public Safety Program of Study and Career Exploratory viewed a demonstration of search and rescue, and apprehension of missing or wanted persons.
Mrs. Nancy Embs, Career Exploratory instructor, coordinated the demonstration with Sergeant Beth Perednas and Sergeant Russ Norcross. Mrs. Embs stated, “These K9 teams are making education come alive for our Cape May Tech students. The hands on, life lessons cannot be duplicated in books or with a computer. This demonstration helps our students make positive choices toward public service career success and personal growth. We wish to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to the K9 teams for the time and effort they put forth in order to build a solid community relationship with our students.”
The unit consists of four Officers/handlers and seven dogs. Sergeant Beth Perednas; K9 Jax, a Belgian Malinois crossed trained in narcotics detection and patrol; K9 Hank, Bloodhound; Sergeant Russ Norcross; K9 Argo, a German Shepherd crossed trained in narcotics detection and patrol; K9 Copper, Bloodhound; Officer Nolan Harris; K9 Axel, a Belgian Malinois crossed trained in explosives detection and patrol; Officer Jose Gomez; K9 Bama, a Belgian Malinois crossed trained in narcotics detection and patrol; and K9 West, Bloodhound.
The K-9 Unit of the Cape May County, New Jersey Sheriff’s Office exists to have well trained dogs and handlers available to assist other Law Enforcement agencies, departments, organizations and citizens of Cape May County.
The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit operates on a 24 hour basis to assist local, State and Federal police agencies with locating lost or wanted persons, narcotics detection, arson investigation as well as explosives detection. This unit has proved to be a valuable asset to local agencies within the county because of rapid response time and availability on last minute notice.
