Sea Isle City’s 2012 Community Day Was Very Well-Attended

By Press Release

SEA ISLE CITY – May 19, countless residents and visitors purchased used bicycles, received literature and free gifts from local civic groups, shredded personal documents and participated in a variety of other activities during Sea Isle City’s 3rd Annual Community Day.
Community Day began with a special Saturday morning City Council Meeting at 9:00 a.m., which allowed weekend-residents to speak with council members and hear updates about City projects. At that same time, the members of the Sea Isle City Garden Club began their 2012 Flower Sale at Sea Isle’s Public School on Park Road, which raised over $1000 for the Garden Club’s annual scholarship program.
At 10:00 a.m., Mayor Leonard Desiderio emceed a Municipal Bicycle Auction, which featured over 60 lost, stolen and unclaimed bikes that were in storage at the Sea Isle City Police Department for over a year. Also at 10:00 a.m., a Shredding Event, sponsored by First Bank of Sea Isle City, began in the parking lot of Sea Isle’s Community Lodge, allowing local residents and property owners to destroy sensitive paperwork in order to protect themselves against identity theft.
At 11:00 a.m., people began gathering inside the Community Lodge, where representatives from nearly 20 City departments, civic clubs, volunteer organizations and environmental groups distributed information and spoke with attendees about upcoming activities. Representatives from AARP Chapter 710, the Sea Isle City Environmental Commission, “Save Our Strays” Cat Rescue, the Cape May County Sheriff Department Explorers, the Wetlands Institute, VFW Post 1963, the Sea Isle City Women’s Civic Club, the Sea Isle City Historical Society and the Sea Isle City Chamber of Commerce & Revitalization were among the groups that greeted participants as they entered the lodge.
At 12 noon, an award ceremony was held inside the lodge, which allowed the community to praise several groups of local achievers. The members of Boy Scout Troop 76 were the first to be honored as this year’s recipients of First Bank of Sea Isle City’s annual Community Partner Award, which came with a check for $2000. Other honorees included the winners of the Sea Isle City Public School’s annual Poster Contest, the recipients of this year’s Sea Isle City Chamber of Commerce’s Scholarship Program, and a group of young ladies who received a trophy from the City for winning the 2012 South Shore Girls Basketball League Championship.
Meanwhile, outside of the Community Lodge, Boy Scout Troop 76 was selling hot dogs and other treats to raise funds for their many activities, the Cape May County SWAT and K-9 units were posing for photos, the Sea Isle Ambulance Corps was allowing visitors to examine the inside of their rescue vehicles, and families were enjoying discounted rides at Gillian’s Funland Amusement Park, which is located steps away from the lodge in Sea Isle’s Marina District. People also had the opportunity to inspect a bright green jitney, which will be one of a fleet of natural-gas powered vehicles serving Sea Isle City’s residents and visitors this summer. The new jitney service is being sponsored by the Sea Isle City Chamber of Commerce and Revitalization.
“It was a wonderful event,” said Community Day Organizer Pattiann Ponichtera. “We were very happy to see so many people in attendance. Community Day is the perfect way to welcome back visitors, share a variety of information and remind everyone what a great town we have!”
