STONE HARBOR — The students in Mary Beth Ross’s Stone Harbor Elementary School 3rd grade class presented the 14th annual “Meet the Presidents” night to a packed audience on Thurs., April 28. Mayor Pagliughi, SH and AV council members, school board members, garden club members, SH American Legion Post 331, families, and friends attended.
The students present speeches dressed as the President they researched. The children are very involved in the research process, reading books, checking websites, and visiting museums. The entire family becomes involved. The students take this information and not only write a five page research report, but create a three minute speech (written in first person narrative) to be given at our “Meet the Presidents” night. They amaze the audience with their poise and confidence when presenting their speeches. This year we had over 130 guests in our audience. Each year the children impress everyone with their public speaking skills. Many remark that it is hard to believe that the children are only in 3rd grade.
On “Presidents Night” Mrs. Ross was honored to receive an award from the American Legion of Cape May County, Post 331. Mrs. Ross was presented with the Educator of the Year Award for “outstanding work in promoting civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism in the classroom.”
