AVALON –– Avalon and Stone Harbor school districts have submitted a request via letter to the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) for $28,000 in grant funds to conduct a “Strategic Plan Study” that would provide estimated cost of educational and personnel options and tax impact analysis.
The cost of the feasibility study would be split between both boards and conducted by attorneys Porzio, Bromberg & Neuman of Vineland. In the request letter the boards indicate that the grant funds have been specifically earmarked for shared services, regionalization and consolidation studies in small school districts.
The districts have shared a business administrator since 1998 and have shared a superintendent and curriculum coordinator through an inter-local agreement since 2004. Avalon Board of Education President John McCorristin said the school districts’ last feasibility study was conducted in 2002.
“We have such great test scores we don’t want to give up the districts,” McCorristin said at the board’s Oct. 15 meeting.
“This barrier island arrangement provides a different and unique set of issues to examine under the impending legislation.
Both boards feel the obligation to gather as much data and information before making any further decisions,” Superintendent David Rauenzahn said in the request letter.
